Unions warn that teachers in Bulgaria qualify as the working poor not only in Europe, but in the developing world.

Teachers in Bulgaria are not only the most poorly paid in Europe; with wages of €300 a month, they are paid around half as much as teachers in Egypt. Bulgarian trade union ‘Education’ says its teachers qualify as the working poor not only in Europe, but in the developing world. More than 2,000 schools and kindergartens in Bulgaria have been closed since 2000, while 10,000 schools have been built in Egypt where the monthly minimum wage for teachers is around €540, reports the union (in Bulgarian)
