Farmers now have the option to offer one-day contracts for harvest work.

The latest change in the Bulgarian Labour Code, approved by the parliament on 2 July 2015, introduced one-day labour contracts in agriculture. The new provisions give farmers the option to conclude one-day employment contracts with workers for the harvest of fruits, vegetables and roses, for jobs that require no special training.

The government expects that this kind of labour contract will increase revenue to the state social security budget by up to BGN 19.2 million (€9.8 million) and will yield BGN 5.3 million (€2.7 million) in revenues from taxes on personal income.

Over two months, the General Labour Inspectorate registered 67,539 instances of one-day labour contracts. The largest numbers were recorded in the regions of Plovdiv (7,654), Targovishte (6,812) and Stara Zagora (6,078). Most of the contracts were for work carried out in vineyards (19,555) and raspberry plantations (11,697).
