Description

Supermarket group Asda, which is part of the US Wal-Mart business, is extending its market reach by building new stores and relocating others. The group’s plans would create 4,300 jobs by the end of 2004. Criticism has been voiced by environmental groups such as Friends of the Earth who said that the new and bigger Asdas would be bad news for local traders, local communities, and farmers. It questioned whether the group could truthfully say it was creating thousands of new jobs as many other jobs in local communities may be lost as a result of its new superstores opening.
