Description

In August 2003, STMicroelectronics was going to close its unit of Rennes, affecting 575 jobs (465 salried workers and 110 temporary workers). The non-temporary workers should be replaced at other units of the company. All temporary workers were being dismissed. STMicroelectronics decided to transfer the French production plant in Asia. In February 2004, Solution Plastique, a local industry, announced its intention to take on 100 to 150 STM workers within 2 years. In the meantime, unions were still strongly protesting against the delocalisation of the company. On 5 July, the courts refused to cancel the social plan, as requested by the unions. On 9 July, 49 workers were relocated internally, 51 had found a job elsewhere, 21 beneficiated from an early-retirement measure, 4 had created their own business. 252 workers were dismissed. 106 were still waiting for a decision.
