Description

On October 21 the Swiss group Petroplus announced that it is to cut 253 jobs at its site in Reichstett in January 2011, following the end of the information and consultation process. The groupĀ intends to close its refinery andĀ convert the plant in a storage unit which would employ only 15 workers. The CFDT union denounced this as a financial decision, rather than a strategic or industrial one, which will result in a loss of almost 1,000 jobs in the area. A study launched by the work council's expert suggested that the plant could in fact survive and have a viable future. The Mayor of Reichstett has stated that the decision was unfair and that the plant made profits last year.
