The European Parliament Liaison office in Ireland, the European Commission Representation in Ireland, and the EU Agency Eurofound, invited online members of the public to celebrate Europe Day 2022 in Ireland.

2022 is the European Year of Youth and this event reached out to the local community and brought together up to 100 young people aged 16-29, as well as an online audience from around Ireland, to learn, listen and engage on key issues and opportunities for young people in the EU.

The Minister for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne T.D. and Irish MEP Ciaran Cuffe opened the event. Eurofound shared its most recent research on youth, including findings on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on young people. There was a contribution from a young person from Ukraine recently arrived in Ireland. Also, representatives from the European Commission and the European Parliament were available to highlight some of the exciting opportunities on offer in the EU for young people, taking questions and listening to participants. Additionally, representatives from Léargas, the Irish coordinator of the European Year of Youth, were also present to share experiences of EU programmes such as Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps. Moderated by Harry McCann, entrepreneur, journalist, public speaker and student.

Background

Europe Day marks the anniversary of the historic 'Schuman declaration' that set out the idea of a new political cooperation in Europe so that war between Europe's nations would be unthinkable. As the conflict in Ukraine rages on, Europe Day 2022 takes on a particular significance. In this difficult time for many Europeans, it is timely to recall the opportunities of living and working in a European Union based on the fundamental values of human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and human rights.

Programme

The event programme is also available on partner websites European Parliament Liaison Office in IrelandEuropean Commission Representation Office in Ireland, and European Youth Portal.
