Event background

Conference on Social and economic impact of migration: Central and East-European perspectives, 17-18 November 2011, Warsaw, Poland

Venue: Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, Nowogrodzka 1/3/5, 00‐513, Warsaw

Participants: If you did not already do it, please fill in the conference evaluation form [50kb, .doc] and email it to events@eurofound.europa.eu.

The conference is organised jointly by the Polish Ministry of Labour and Social Policy and Eurofound under the Polish Presidency of the European Union.

Objectives

The Polish Presidency provides a unique opportunity to examine the highly complex impacts of labour migration from a Central and East-European perspective. Eurofound has extensive and recent experience in migration research.

The first day of the conference will be dedicated to discussions related to social and employment consequences of labour outflow from Central and Eastern Europe to the EU15, whereas the second day is concerned with labour inflow into these countries.

Content

The first day will focus on the social consequences of migration on those left behind, i.e. the impact of migration on families and children, as well as on the elderly.

Three workshops are organised on the following themes:

  • Impact of migration on families, children and young adults

  • Addressing labour shortages

  • Management of migration processes at local and regional levels

The second day will be dedicated to the scale and type of migration flows to countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The final concluding panel debate will take stock of the debate and will discuss the main issues and challenges facing migration and integration from a European perspective.

Representatives of the EU institutions, national governments, and experts responsible for dealing with migration and integration issues will offer their insights on the way forward.

A programme and practical information for participants are available.
