Event background

Invest in human capital - Europe's greatest asset, 24-25 November 2010, Brussels, Belgium

Employment Week 2010 will provide a forum for organisations across all member states, and beyond, to demonstrate the initiatives and projects they are running to improve employment conditions in their region. The conference will focus on some of the key drivers for recovery. Presentations from speakers from the Commission, from a range of NGOs, corporates and other bodies will open up the debate on these crucial issues.

The 2010 conference programme was developed in cooperation with DG Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities and will provide an update on latest policy developments. Eurofound will be contributing to the programme of events with:

  • the launch of the new ERM Report at 10.15am on Wednesday 24 November, by Eurofound authors Donald Storrie and Irene Mandl
ERM Report 2010: Extending flexicurity - The potential of short-time working schemes
Publicly subsidised short-time working schemes have been used extensively to cope with the recession. They are a prime example of how the state, employers and workers can share the burden of a recession. However, can such job retention schemes be in line with modern active labour market policies in general and the European Employment Strategy in particular?

  • a presentation on **Overcoming social exclusion and poverty at 10.15am on Thursday 25 November, by Robert Anderson, Head of Living Conditions & Quality of Life Research Unit, Eurofound
**It is vital to explore every facet of poverty and social exclusion in order to improve the chances of our potential workforce. As the types of employment contract become more numerous, so our perceptions of security change. Our policy makers must acknowledge these perceptions and build policies to overcome poverty and social exclusion.

Eurofound will have an exhibition stand (number 49) at the event.
