Event background

Eurofound’s Deputy Director Maria Jepsen delivered a keynote speech at the EU Presidency of Croatia’s conference on Gender Equality in Zagreb. The presentation focused on “Future jobs, current challenges” in advance of the conference’s first session on: Supply and Demand of skills and occupations in the labour market from gender perspective.

The aim of the two-day conference was to discuss the possibility of decreasing the employment gap between women and men by addressing influencing factors to women’s full participation in the labour market.

The Conference focused on specific measures that have proven to be effective in decreasing a gender employment gap, and on a possibility to strengthen monitoring and evaluation tools of implemented measures at the EU level.

The Conference was divided into four panels which will address the factors influencing women’s lower participation in the labour market.

Each panel emphasised one of the following challenges:

  1. supply and demand of skills and occupations in the labour market from gender perspective

  2. gender dimension of non-standard, atypical employment

  3. long term care for dependent members of the family in the context of work-life balance

  4. harassment and sexual harassment in the world of work.

Introduction to the third panel saw a presentation of the most recent research note on home-based long -term care “Home-based formal long-term care for adults and children with disabilities and older persons” prepared by European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE). Panellists and participants were Croatian and also included international researchers, academics, officials, representatives of Member States, EU institutions and/or UN bodies, practitioners, civil society organizations and social partners. The draft of conclusions made during the Conference should provide input and the basis for the Council Conclusions in 2020, building on previous work and political commitments expressed by the Council, the European Parliament, the Commission, Finnish presidency and other relevant stakeholders.
