Event background

European Wellbeing Summit 2010, 19-20 May 2010, Brussels, Belgium

'Measuring the emotional economy in the 21st century'

On its 75th anniversary, Gallup in partnership with the Institute for Advanced Behavioural Studies in Luxembourg invites social scientists, economists and key decision-makers to the European Wellbeing Summit 2010 to discuss whether putting constituencies' well-being at the heart of policy-making is a political utopia or a necessary paradigm shift.

The two-day event brings together Europe's leading policymakers, world-renowned research scientists, recognised leaders from the public and private sectors, and innovators in the fields of healthcare, education, industry and government. It aims to enhance the understanding of crucial issues that affect the well-being of not only Europeans but all of the world's citizens.

Some of the key issues to be discussed during the summit are:

  • methods for measuring the emotional economy, well-being, quality of life and social progress in Europe and worldwide;

  • interrelations between well-being and other factors such as GDP, work, demographic change and education;

  • the 'Europe 2020' strategy and whether it is paving the way for sustainable growth and well-being for EU citizens;

  • behavioural economics as a tool for better policy decisions.

Eurofound's Director Jorma Karppinen will make a presentation on Subjective wellbeing in Europe (269Kb PDF), drawing on the most recent findings from Eurofound's European Quality of Life Surveys.

Head of Eurofound's Surveys and Trends Unit Agnès Parent-Thirion will also make a presentation on Major trends and changes affecting the workforce and the quality of work.
