Event background

2nd session: 7 - 9 March 2011, Madrid, Spain

Venue: Fundación Tripartita para la Formación en el Empleo

Background

A skilled workforce is recognised as key for the future of Europe as a whole. At European level, the main message developed through various communications is the link between developing skills and economic growth. Moreover, all concerned parties – namely governments, social partners, managers and workers – have an interest in developing skills.

Exchanging information on current practices, as well as learning from past experiences, will be of paramount importance in facing the current crisis and dealing with its severe impact on employment in the EU. Sharing knowledge, ideas and practical experiences of programme implementation is a proven incentive for national action and can contribute to the development of a ‘shared commitment' for skills development.

Objectives of the seminar

The [Foundation Seminar Series (FSS)](/search/node/events OR fss?oldIndex) 2010-2011, now in its 7th year, aims to support the challenge of developing skills and employability of the European workforce, by bringing forward arguments and case studies illustrating the key aspect of skills development for the present and future labour market.

In order to present and discuss the various initiatives enacted by different actors, the two sessions of the seminar will be developed around two main broad themes:

  • developing incentives for lifelong learning for employees and companies, and

  • filling current skills gaps and matching the future demand for skills in a changing labour market.

This 2nd session will discuss sectoral and company-level initiatives dealing with incentives for training and lifelong learning, skills recognition systems and the future demand for skills. The 1st session introduced the theme with regard to current changes in the labour market and their consequences for skill and competence needs and lifelong learning.
