Background

This seminar is organised jointly by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions, Dublin, and the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

Objectives

Following the current discussion on labour mobility and the 'European Year of Workers’ Mobility 2006', the seminar will aim at comparing EU and US perspectives on geographical and labour market mobility. Furthermore, it will be initiating and promoting a dialogue between policy makers and researchers from the US and from Europe regarding mobility issues from a labour market and social policy perspective.

  • Employees on the move – How much mobility do Europe and the US need?

  • How many employees are on the move?

  • What are the effects of mobility?

  • What should be done? Mobility as a challenge for labour market and social policy

  • Next steps – Recommendation for policy makers on both sides of the Atlantic.
