The Ministerial Conference will be hosted by the Austrian Government under the auspices of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection and will also include the participation of NGOs and the scientific community.

Objectives

Active ageing and in particular the participation of older persons in society will be at the heart of the ministerial segment of the conference, which will seek to set priorities for the coming five years for improving the quality of life of people of all ages. Experts and ministerial panels will tackle pressing policy questions such as how best to promote the participation of older persons in the labour market and societal activities, as well as means of creating enabling environments for healthy and independent ageing.

A provisional agenda is available from the UNECE website.

Eurofound contribution

Robert Anderson will contribute to the panel discussion 'Ensuring a society for all ages: promoting quality of life and active ageing' on Wednesday 19 September from 11.45 am - 1.15 pm. The panel will discuss social, political and cultural implications of increasing life expectancy and the extension of working lives, considering also the gender dimension. It will reflect on how the perception of being ‘old’ changes in the context of work and how to acknowledge the contributions of the older workfirce in practice. What is needed to make working longer possible and attractive?

Robert Anderson will also participate in the Research Forum taking place on 18 September, where he will moderate a session on 'Measures for guaranteeing well-being in old age and those for promoting active ageing. How to balance these measures.'
