Event background

11 April 2014, Manchester, UK

The London-based Middlesex University is organising a seminar entitled 'Work-life balance, fairness and social justice in recession' at the University of Manchester on 11 April 2014.

Objectives

The seminar is part of a series whose aims are:

  • to understand the work-life challenges for employees, employers and policy-makers posed by economic recession and austerity measures

  • to provide a forum for a range of stakeholders, from academia, business, the public and voluntary sectors, to discuss how to meet these challenges

  • to contribute to current policy debates on work-life balance, and on the quality of working life, happiness, social justice, equalities, and care-giving

This seminar series examines the implications of the economic environment for gender equality, health and well-being, care and care-giving, employment relations and workplace innovations. The series also explores the impacts of economic recession and austerity measures on individuals, families, organisations and the wider community.

An underlying theme of the series is the question of how to meet a triple agenda of:

  • enhancing employee work-life balance

  • sustaining or enhancing organisational effectiveness

  • contributing to social justice

Eurofound contribution

Contributors will highlight experiences in the UK and in other national contexts as well as innovative workplace and policy initiatives. Eurofound will be represented by Greet Vermeylen, Research Manager at Eurofound’s Working Conditions and Industrial Relations Unit.
