Members of the armed forces, police, department of civil defence and prison wardens have been given the right to join a trade union – but not to strike.
The law, which covers 4,000 people, was signed by the President of Malta in the second week of March 2015.
However, members of the armed forced are still prohibited from going on strike. The Times of Malta reported that three newly-formed unions, namely the Police Officers Union, the Armed Forces Union and the Correctional Officers Union, together representing more than 800 members, signed an affiliation agreement with the General Workers' Union, Malta's largest trade union, at the end of March 2015.
