Augšupēja konverģence ir ārkārtīgi svarīga Eiropas Savienības projektam. Attiecībā uz konkrētiem ekonomiskajiem un sociālajiem rādītājiem augšupēja konverģence nozīmē, ka dalībvalstis vidēji uzlabo savu sniegumu, virzoties uz politikas mērķi vai sabiedrībai pieņemamu virzienu, vienlaikus samazinot atšķirības starp tām. Tādā veidā valstis ar zemākiem rezultātiem panāk valstis, kurām ir vislabākie rezultāti, kamēr abas valstis pieaug.
