To celebrate the centenary of the International Labour Organization, the National University of Ireland (NUI), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Department of Business Enterprise and Innovation (DBEI) are collaborating in the organisation of a day of celebration in Dublin on Tuesday 17 September 2019.

Event background

To celebrate the centenary of the International Labour Organization, the National University of Ireland (NUI), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Department of Business Enterprise and Innovation (DBEI) are collaborating in the organisation of a day of celebration in Dublin on Tuesday 17 September 2019.

The programme for the conference has been organised in consultation with the Irish Employers’ confederation Ibec and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, ICTU. The opening address will be delivered by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins.

The conference will include three morning plenary sessions featuring three keynote speakers. In the afternoon, there will be three workshops on:

- The future of work

- Fairness, security and opportunity

- Sustainable and decent advancement for all

Eurofound’s Irish Board members are involved in this event and Eurofound researchers will participate actively in the conference with Barbara Gerstenberger, Head of Unit for Working Life acting as first Commentator in Workshop 1 on the Future of work. Researchers Isabella Biletta, Oscar Vargas, Mathijn Wilkens and Franz Eiffe will participate actively in the sessions covering Fairness, security and opportunity and Sustainable and decent advancement for all. Eurofound will also hold an exhibition to showcase its latest research findings on areas linked to the future of work.

The conference will be followed in the evening by the biennial NUI Edward Phelan lecture, organised jointly by NUI and the ILO. This year the lecture will be delivered by the Nobel Laureate, Kailash Satyarthi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 for his contribution towards the ending of child labour and his advocacy of the rights of children and young people to education.
