Event background

Drawing on previous research and fresh findings, Eurofound experts Daphne Ahrendt and Sanna Nivakoski explored the key challenges for persons with disabilities to fully participate in society, while looking at how policy and society can better foster independence and inclusion for people with disabilities across the EU. They provided their insights and a lively presentation followed by an exchange of ideas with participants that examined both progress made at EU level and the challenges that remain for people with disabilities.

Today, people with disabilities in the EU still face many substantial barriers, including to employment, living independently, and social inclusion. Participation in the labour market remains a challenge for many, and poverty, institutionalisation and social exclusion are persistent risks. Although several EU Member States have introduced deinstitutionalisation strategies, the numbers of children, adults with disabilities, and older people in residential care are on the rise, underlining the limitations of current approaches.

The event is for up to 30 participants and an opportunity to engage directly with Eurofound’s experts to explore data and findings in an informal setting, share perspectives and network with peers in the fields of social affairs, working conditions, industrial relations, and employment. It is also a valuable platform for sharing Eurofound’s upcoming research.
