This informal ministerial meeting brought together 27 ministers responsible for employment and social policy. On 14 October, following interventions by the EU Presidency and Nicolas Schmit, EU Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Eurofound’s Executive Director, Ivailo Kalfin, fed into the discussions drawing on Eurofound’s most recent data with a presentation on the impact of raising energy prices on the social situation of EU Member States.

Baggrund for arrangementet

This informal ministerial meeting brought together 27 ministers responsible for employment and social policy. The participants discussed the working topics of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU, especially the impact of energy poverty and the Ukrainian crisis.

On 14 October, following interventions by the EU Presidency and Nicolas Schmit, EU Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Eurofound’s Executive Director, Ivailo Kalfin, fed into the discussions drawing on Eurofound’s most recent data with a presentation on the impact of raising energy prices on the social situation of EU Member States.

At flytte fokus fra energisubsidier til at reducere energiafhængighed
Den russiske invasion af Ukraine og de deraf følgende sanktioner har fået energipriserne til at stige voldsomt. Regeringer, der ønsker at afbøde de negative konsekvenser af prisstigninger for husholdninger, har indført energisubsidier og momsnedsættelser for elektricitet, gas og brændstof. Selvom sådanne politikker kan være nødvendige for at beskytte dem, der har mest brug for det, er subsidiering af energiforbruget en kortsigtet løsning – det er en midlertidig, delvis kompensation, som ikke altid når ud til dem, der er hårdest ramt. Derudover strider subsidieringen af fossile brændstoffer i konflikt med EU's mål om at begrænse CO2-udledningen og opretholder sin energiafhængighed af tredjelande som Rusland.
