What can companies do to spark innovation in the workplace?
As we leave behind the lockdowns and business disruptions of COVID-19 and enter a ‘new normal’, it is time to talk about how workplaces might be transformed to drive innovation. Some may baulk at this suggestion, as we continue to grapple with the pandemic fallout, but crises have always been a cradle for change, creating a space to reflect on the things that are not working and to find solutions to them. Innovation is critical now as Europe faces into the transition to a green and digital economy. Businesses will have to develop processes, products and business models that are compatible with a climate-neutral future. They will have to digitalise across their operations and outputs, and do so fast to stay abreast of the competition.

Todhchaí na hoibre: Cad is féidir linn a fhoghlaim ó chomharchumainn agus ó fhiontair shóisialta?
Tá cuid mhór den phlé ar thodhchaí na hoibre dírithe ar an domhandú agus ar an teicneolaíocht, agus ar a dtionchair ar mhargadh an tsaothair. Mar sin féin, tá spéis ag méadú freisin sna samhlacha gnó a úsáideann comharchumainn agus fiontair shóisialta, agus conas is féidir leo cur le todhchaí níos fearr na hoibre. Léiríonn taighde Eurofound gur eagraíochtaí athléimneach iad comharchumainn agus fiontair shóisialta a bhfuil suim acu poist ardchaighdeáin a chruthú agus rannchuidiú dearfach a dhéanamh leis an margadh saothair.

The human factor in innovation
Companies are constantly competing for the next big thing in innovation – the next-generation 3D phone, the quantum computer, the virtual doctor. They fixate on technological breakthroughs and look for new business models. But innovation also needs systems, an organisational structure and people who work together. The human factor in innovation is often forgotten or neglected – the employees’ skills, their level of input, their autonomy in their jobs and the rewards they receive. Or do such factors really play any role in innovation?

Trust and dialogue are the secrets to business success in times of crisis
Europe has gone through significant economic change over the past decade. Businesses have had to manage the challenges posed by the financial crisis, globalisation and a rapidly changing labour market. Eurofound's new report Win-win arrangements: Innovative measures through social dialogue at company level has shown that new challenges do not always require radical new approaches , and that innovation can be found in the full implementation of well-established positive workplace practices.
