Under de 10 åren från 2014 till 2024 ökade antalet socialarbetare i EU från 8 miljoner till 10 miljoner. De utgör nu 5 % av EU:s totala arbetskraft. Samtidigt råder det brist på arbetskraft inom sektorn och den fortsätter att kännetecknas av låga löner – omkring 20 % lägre än genomsnittslönen i medlemsstaternas ekonomier som helhet.
