The period 2007–2012, covered by the second European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS), was a critical time for Croatia, with EU integration on the horizon and the effects of the recession impacting on all strands of society. This report compares recent changes and trends in Croatia during this period with those in the rest of the EU, focusing on several key aspects of quality of life: standard of living, housing, employment, work–life balance, health and healthcare and quality of public institutions. It also charts people’s perceptions regarding social tensions, social exclusion, life satisfaction and happiness. While the findings reveal a lower standard of living overall in Croatia compared to the EU28 – almost a third of people reporting difficulties in making ends meet – as well as high levels of unemployment and job insecurity, there are positive developments in several areas: quality of housing, family life, subjective well-being and improved health and access to health services.

Trends in quality of life in the EU: 2003-2009 (résumé)

Monitoring changes in Europeans’ quality of life and developing policies to boost their well-being are increasingly important in EU debate. Increasingly, it is acknowledged that while economic indicators such as gross domestic product (GDP) are important in assessing the level of well-being in a country, they are not sufficient. More and more, it is argued that public policy should be assessed in terms of how it directly promotes citizens’ welfare, taking in considerations of social and environmental, as well as economic, conditions.

Trends in quality of life - Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia: 2007–2012

Is quality of life improving in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia? Has the crisis worsened the particularly low baseline revealed by the second European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS)? This report shows the positive progress made in the country over the period 2007–2012 in several aspects of life quality. Major improvements relate to living conditions, health, quality of public services, well-being and satisfaction levels in general. Nevertheless, there is still evidence of high material deprivation, low housing quality and low quality of the environment.

Trends in quality of life – Turkey: 2003–2012

Over the past decade, Turkey has undergone huge economic and social change. This report uses Eurofound’s European Quality of Life Survey to capture changes and developments in the quality of life of Turkish people, measured at three periods over the past decade: 2003, 2007 and 2012. The report examines the key improvements in quality of life over this period and investigates whether all social groups benefited equally. It explores the impact of recent policy changes and charts new expectations that may be emerging in Turkey. It finds that people in Turkey became much more satisfied with their lives over the period; they overtook the EU average in terms of satisfaction with health services and self- assessed health; poverty and material deprivation diminished. However, Turkey has a very high proportion of early school leavers, and gender inequality remains stark.
