This informal ministerial meeting brought together 27 ministers responsible for employment and social policy. On 14 October, following interventions by the EU Presidency and Nicolas Schmit, EU Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Eurofound’s Executive Director, Ivailo Kalfin, fed into the discussions drawing on Eurofound’s most recent data with a presentation on the impact of raising energy prices on the social situation of EU Member States.

This informal ministerial meeting brought together 27 ministers responsible for employment and social policy. The participants discussed the working topics of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU, especially the impact of energy poverty and the Ukrainian crisis.

On 14 October, following interventions by the EU Presidency and Nicolas Schmit, EU Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Eurofound’s Executive Director, Ivailo Kalfin, fed into the discussions drawing on Eurofound’s most recent data with a presentation on the impact of raising energy prices on the social situation of EU Member States.

Μετατόπιση της εστίασης από τις επιδοτήσεις στον τομέα της ενέργειας στη μείωση της ενεργειακής εξάρτησης

Η ρωσική εισβολή στην Ουκρανία και οι επακόλουθες κυρώσεις έχουν προκαλέσει εκτίναξη των τιμών της ενέργειας. Οι κυβερνήσεις που επιδιώκουν να μετριάσουν τις αρνητικές επιπτώσεις των αυξήσεων των τιμών στα νοικοκυριά έχουν θεσπίσει επιδοτήσεις στον τομέα της ενέργειας και μειώσεις του ΦΠΑ για την ηλεκτρική ενέργεια, το φυσικό αέριο και τα καύσιμα. Ενώ τέτοιες πολιτικές μπορεί να χρειαστούν για την προστασία όσων έχουν μεγαλύτερη ανάγκη, η επιδότηση της χρήσης ενέργειας είναι μια βραχυπρόθεσμη λύση – είναι μια προσωρινή, μερική αποζημίωση που δεν φτάνει πάντα σε αυτούς που πλήττονται περισσότερο. Επιπλέον, η επιδότηση της χρήσης ενέργειας από ορυκτά καύσιμα έρχεται σε αντίθεση με τους στόχους της ΕΕ για περιορισμό των εκπομπών διοξειδίου του άνθρακα και διατηρεί την ενεργειακή της εξάρτηση από τρίτες χώρες, όπως η Ρωσία.
