Competitiveness and inclusion in a new geopolitical era: Prosperity for all?
To mark its 50th anniversary, Eurofound hosted a high-level event with EU institutions, social partners and stakeholders in Brussels to debate Europe’s future. Speakers discussed social dialogue, competitiveness and fairness amid profound uncertainty.

To mark its 50-year anniversary, Eurofound hosted a high-level event with key Brussels-based stakeholders to examine how Europe can balance economic competitiveness, social rights, inclusive growth and the role of social partners in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment – highlighting how working conditions, job quality and active social dialogue are integral to Europe’s competitiveness.
The event brought together senior representatives from ETUC, BusinessEurope, the European Commission, European Parliament, and other key organisations.
Rising geopolitical uncertainties, trade tensions and rapid economic shifts are putting Europe's social model to the test. In its first six months, the European Commission has prioritised the re-industrialisation of key European sectors, committing to boosting European productivity and ensuring European companies can compete on the global stage - all while in the coming months, the European Commission will launch a series of ambitious initiatives, including a European Quality Jobs Act and a new Action Plan for the European Pillar of Social Rights.
As the focus on competitiveness takes on heightened urgency and increasing threats on our borders demand significant investment in defence and security, the event addressed crucial emerging questions such as: How can the EU reconcile competing priorities while maintaining the European Social Model and social rights? How can the EU continue to balance economic transformation with inclusive growth, quality jobs, and prosperity?

Cristina Arigho
Senior Communication ManagerCristina Arigho is Senior Communications Manager en Stakeholder Engagement and Promotions Lead bij de eenheid Informatie en Communicatie bij Eurofound, en is in 2012 bij het Agentschap in dienst getreden. Daarvoor werkte ze bijna 20 jaar in Brussel in verschillende functies, waaronder bij de Europese Commissie, onder meer als woordvoerder van DG Werkgelegenheid, Sociale Zaken en Inclusie (2010-2012) en van DG Begroting (2007-2009). Voordat zij bij de woordvoerder van de Commissie in dienst trad, was zij persvoorlichter bij DG Werkgelegenheid (2005-2007) en speechschrijver voor de toenmalige commissaris en directeur-generaal (2003-2005). Voorafgaand aan haar jaren bij de Commissie werkte ze voor RTÉ radio en televisie (Ierse nationale televisie) in Brussel als productieassistent en onderzoeker, en later als nieuwsproducent. Cristina is afgestudeerd in Toegepaste Talen aan de Universiteit van Ulster in Coleraine, Noord-Ierland.

Ivailo Kalfin
Executive DirectorIvailo Kalfin trad op 1 juni 2021 in dienst bij Eurofound als uitvoerend directeur. De expertise van de heer Kalfin bestrijkt een scala aan gebieden, van de dynamiek van de arbeidsmarkt en het sociaal beleid tot wereldwijde politieke trends, de EU en de begroting, evenals de digitale transformatie. Hij heeft vijf hoofdprioriteiten voor zijn rol bij Eurofound geschetst: ondersteuning van de mainstreaming van de groene en digitale transitie in Europa; de uitvoering van het actieplan voor de Europese pijler van sociale rechten aan te vullen met empirisch onderbouwd onderzoek; intensievere samenwerking met internationale organisaties en externe partners en een groter bereik naar de landen van het Europees nabuurschapsbeleid; steun voor het vergroten en uitbreiden van de capaciteit van de sociale partners binnen de bevoegdheden van het Agentschap; het profiel van Eurofound bij de belangrijkste belanghebbenden vergroten.
Maria Jepsen
Deputy DirectorMaria Jepsen is adjunct-directeur van Eurofound en werd op 1 november 2019 benoemd. Zij coördineert de programma-ontwikkeling van het Agentschap. Daarvoor was ze directeur van de onderzoeksafdeling van het Europees Vakbondsinstituut (ETUI) en assistent-professor en research fellow aan de Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Momenteel is ze ook universitair hoofddocent arbeidseconomie aan de ULB en extern docent aan het Europacollege in Brugge, België. Haar belangrijkste onderzoeksinteresses zijn onder meer genderstudies, de impact van verzorgingsstaten op arbeidsaanbod, lonen en arbeidsomstandigheden, en de ontwikkeling van de Europese sociale dimensie. Mevrouw Jepsen is lid geweest van verschillende commissies, raden en adviesraden op nationaal en internationaal niveau op het gebied van werkgelegenheid, sociale zaken, gender en onderzoek. Ze was ook coördinator van het tripartiete raadgevend comité van de Europese Commissie voor gezondheid en veiligheid op het werk. Ze behaalde een doctoraat in de economie en een master in econometrie aan de Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB).
