John Hurley

Senior research manager

John Hurley is a senior research manager in the Employment unit at Eurofound. He took up the role of research manager in February 2012. He contributes to a number of research projects including the European Jobs Monitor and has authored or co-authored over 20 reports as well as journal contributions and edited collections during his time at Eurofound. His main research interests are in the areas of comparative labour market analysis, restructuring and the changing world of work. John is a graduate of both Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin.

Building back better: Construction essential for EU green transition

COVID-19: A tale of two service sectors

The employment fallout of COVID-19 has been a story of two types of service work. Office-based knowledge workers have largely kept their jobs and incomes while participating in the huge and apparently successful ad hoc social experiment in working from home. Client-facing service workers have borne the brunt of the lockdowns and the steep declines in demand for in-person services in restaurants, hotels, leisure and the arts. The upshot is that, unlike the ‘mancession’ following the global financial crisis, the first impacts of the pandemic have fallen disproportionately on low-paid female workers. But to see this in the statistics, we must start by looking beyond the unemployment rate.

Coronavirus: A labour market earthquake

It is less than four weeks since the first large European Coronavirus-related company bankruptcy (Flybe, a British regional airline, on 5 March), but it is clear already that the pandemic is going to disrupt labour markets as seriously as the global financial crisis, if not more so. A large majority of large-scale restructuring reported in the European Restructuring Monitor (ERM) in recent weeks have cited the Coronavirus outbreak as the proximate cause of announced job losses.

What Europe can learn from living-wage campaigns

The coronavirus disease (Covid-19) is having drastic consequences for the world of work. In most European countries workers who are not delivering essential ‘frontline’ services are being asked to stay home. Unfortunately many are out of work, while many of those who are not are minimum-wage and low-pay workers, including those working in retail and food-supply chains. How can we ensure that these workers, so essential to our daily lives, are adequately and fairly paid?

Where are all the good jobs?

Economic disparities have been decreasing between EU member states over the past decade, but at the same time inequality has been growing within member states. Despite national level convergence, the gap in wealth and income between the rich and the poor is growing in most of Europe. Some of this rise has been attributed to increasing returns to education pushing earnings up faster for those in jobs requiring higher levels of education – while wages stagnate for the rest.

New-generation cars boost manufacturing employment

Rising levels of employment in manufacturing in the EU since 2013 have seen the part reversal of a long-term decline in employment in this sector. Data from the European Restructuring Monitor (ERM) database to early September 2017 show that, for the first time since 2005, the number of new manufacturing jobs announced in national media (91,740) outstripped the number of announced job losses (46,478).

Employment shifts in Europe during the recovery: three little noticed trends

The EU has finally recovered all the net employment losses sustained since the global financial crisis. It has been a long and painful process. But there is at last growing evidence of positive momentum in EU labour markets, if not quite ‘animal spirits’. Many of those member states most affected by the global downturn have recorded significant employment growth in the last three years – including Spain (+9%), Ireland (+8%) and Greece (+5%).

Dragoș Adăscăliței je raziskovalec v enoti za zaposlovanje pri Eurofoundu. Njegove trenutne raziskave se osredotočajo na teme, povezane s prihodnostjo dela, vključno z vplivom umetne inteligence na delovna mesta, posledicami avtomatizacije za zaposlovanje in regulativnimi vprašanji, ki obkrožajo ekonomijo platform. Redno sodeluje tudi pri primerjalnih projektih, ki spremljajo strukturne spremembe na evropskih trgih dela. Preden se je pridružil Eurofoundu, je bil predavatelj za delovna razmerja na Univerzi v Sheffieldu, Šola za menedžment. Magistriral je iz politologije na Srednjeevropski univerzi in doktoriral iz sociologije na Univerzi v Mannheimu.

Stavroula Demetriades

Stavroula Demetriades je višja vodja raziskav v enoti za zaposlovanje pri Eurofoundu. Odgovorna je za raziskave na področjih zelenega in pravičnega prehoda, socialnega dialoga, praks upravljanja, inovacij in hibridnega dela. Doktorirala je iz sociologije na Univerzi v Aalborgu na Danskem. Ima tudi magisterij iz ekonomskih politik na Trinity College Dublin in magisterij iz regionalnega razvoja na Univerzi v Atenah. Preden se je leta 1999 pridružila Eurofoundu, je delala na raziskovalnih inštitutih, na različnih delovnih mestih v javnem in zasebnem sektorju ter izvajala organizacijske in socialno-ekonomske študije. Njeni glavni raziskovalni interesi vključujejo zeleni in pravičen prehod, upravljanje s človeškimi viri, delovne sisteme, inovacije, zaposlovanje in socialni dialog. Garance Hingre

Garance Hingre je uradnik za podporo raziskavam v enoti za zaposlovanje pri Eurofoundu. Prispeva predvsem k upravljanju podatkovnih zbirk Evropskega nadzora prestrukturiranja. Pred tem je delala kot raziskovalna asistentka na ESRI v Dublinu in kot raziskovalna pripravnica pri Eurofoundu, oboje v enotah za socialno politiko, pri čemer se je osredotočila predvsem na neenakosti med spoloma. Magistrirala je iz politične ekonomije na London School of Economics and Political Science in diplomirala iz evropskih političnih ved na ESPOL-u.

Tadas Leončikas

Tadas Leončikas je od septembra 2022 vodja enote za zaposlovanje pri Eurofoundu. Pred tem je bil višji vodja raziskav v enoti za socialne politike, kjer je vodil evropsko raziskavo o kakovosti življenja (EQLS) in razvijal Eurofoundovo raziskavo. Odkar se je leta 2010 pridružil Eurofoundu, se je ukvarjal z različnimi temami, vključno z metodami raziskav, kakovostjo življenja, socialno mobilnostjo, socialno vključenostjo, zaupanjem in stanovanjskimi pomanjkljivostmi. V svoji prejšnji karieri je vodil Inštitut za etnične študije v Litvi, kjer je delal na študijah, povezanih s položajem etničnih manjšin, migrantov in drugih ranljivih skupin. Kot raziskovalec je v preteklosti sodeloval z Agencijo Evropske unije za temeljne pravice, Programom Združenih narodov za razvoj in Mednarodno organizacijo za migracije. Ima doktorat iz sociologije.

Chiara Litardi

Chiara Litardi je raziskovalka v enoti za zaposlovanje pri Eurofoundu. Ukvarja se s temami, povezanimi s prestrukturiranjem, zaposlovanjem in navzgor usmerjeno konvergenco. Pred tem je bila pooblaščena za podporo raziskavam, odgovorna za upravljanje podatkov, nadzor kakovosti in analizo podatkovnih baz European Restructuring Monitor. Preden se je leta 2021 pridružila Eurofoundu, je delala kot analitičarka v Evropski centralni banki, kjer je izvajala raziskave o plačilnem vedenju in finančni vključenosti. Magistrirala je iz ekonomije in financ na Univerzi LUISS v Rimu in dvojno diplomo iz kvantitativnih tehnik za ekonomijo in management (QTEM).

Sarah Pearcey

Sarah Pearcey je administrativna pomočnica in se je leta 2022 preselila v enoto za zaposlovanje. Sarah se je Eurofoundu pridružila leta 2012 iz Evropske komisije, kjer je večinoma delala od leta 2001 v Bruslju in Dublinu. Sarah ima več kot 30 let izkušenj na podobnih položajih v mednarodnih okoljih po vsej Evropi in ima kvalifikacijo za poslovno administracijo.

Rui Ribeiro

Carlos Vacas‑Soriano

Carlos Vacas Soriano je višji vodja raziskav v enoti za zaposlovanje pri Eurofoundu. Ukvarja se s temami, povezanimi z neenakostmi v plačah in dohodkih, minimalnimi plačami, nizko plačo, kakovostjo delovnih mest, začasno zaposlitvijo in segmentacijo ter kakovostjo delovnih mest. Preden se je leta 2010 pridružil Eurofoundu, je delal kot makroekonomski analitik za Evropsko komisijo in kot raziskovalec na evropskih trgih dela pri španski centralni banki. Magistriral je iz evropskih ekonomskih študij na College of Europe v Bruggeju in doktoriral iz ekonomije dela na Univerzi v Salamanci (doktor Europaeus).

Gijs van Houten

Gijs van Houten je višji vodja raziskav v enoti za zaposlovanje pri Eurofoundu. Ima posebno strokovno znanje na področju metodologije mednacionalnih raziskav in analize praks na delovnem mestu in organizacijskih strategij. Vodi Eurofoundovo projektno skupino za zbiranje podatkov ter je odgovoren za zasnovo in metodologijo evropske raziskave o delovnih razmerah za leto 2024, ki bo ključni korak pri zagotavljanju prihodnjih raziskav Eurofounda. Preden se je leta 2010 pridružil Eurofoundu, je delal na Nizozemskem inštitutu za družbene raziskave (SCP). Gijs je leta 2016 preživel eno leto v raziskovalnem centru Pew v Washingtonu. Magistriral je iz sociologije na Univerzi Radboud v Nijmegenu in doktoriral iz družboslovja na Univerzi v Utrechtu.

Christopher White
