The debate
As the European world of work undergoes a profound digital and social transformation, the nature of workplace hazards is widening to further cover psychological issues. While traditional safety risks are still a concern, a question looms: Is work in Europe becoming more stressful?
This joint webinar brings together the latest evidence from two landmark studies: Eurofound’s 2024 European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS) and EU-OSHA’s 2024 European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks(opens in new tab)This link opens in a new tab (ESENER). Moderator Mary McCaughey speaks with Agnes Parent-Thirion, Eurofound Senior Research Manager, and Xabier Irastorza, Senior Research Project Manager at EU-OSHA, about new data showing that nearly 45% of workers now face mental health risk factors.
They will also look at the role of job quality in supporting mental and physical well-being and discuss which psychosocial risks factors are most prevalent.
Rapid digitalisation and changes to the work environment have brought significant stressors, but managing risk remains fundamental. Data from the ESENER survey suggests that while 21% of establishments find psychosocial risks more difficult to manage than physical ones, many still fail to implement systematic assessments and involve workers. EWCS 24 data also indicate that 29% of workers in the EU are not adequately informed about the prevention of work-related stress.
As well as identifying the issues, the webinar will also provide an opportunity to discuss solutions, including how practical measures related to job redesign, social support, and worker participation can turn a poor environment into a resource enhancing and supportive one.

Agnès Parent-Thirion
Senior research managerAgnès Parent-Thirion is senior onderzoeksmanager bij de afdeling Arbeidsleven van Eurofound, belast met de planning, ontwikkeling en uitvoering van onderzoeksprojecten op het gebied van arbeidsomstandigheden, met name de Europese enquête naar de arbeidsomstandigheden (EWCS) en de analyses daarvan. Zij is verantwoordelijk voor de buitengewone editie van de EWCS 2021 en voor de voorbereiding van de vragenlijst voor de EWCS 2024. Haar onderzoeksinteresses omvatten arbeidsomstandigheden, kwaliteit van banen, het monitoren van arbeidsomstandigheden, werkorganisatie, gender, de toekomst van werk en tijd. Ze werkt al meer dan tien jaar op het gebied van Europese vergelijkende enquêtes, in alle aspecten, waaronder ontwerp, ontwikkeling van vragenlijsten, veldwerk, kwaliteitscontrole en analyse. Ze is afgestudeerd in economie en management aan de universiteiten Paris IX Dauphine en Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne en heeft een postdoctoraal diploma in statistiek van Trinity College Dublin. Ze heeft onlangs online cursussen over kunstmatige intelligentie afgerond: onderzoekend leiderschap met MIT Sloan Executive Education en 'Les grand enjeux de la transition: re-ouvrir l'horizon, comprendre pour agir' met de Campus de la Transition. Voordat ze bij Eurofound kwam, werkte ze een aantal jaren bij de Europese Commissie.
Mary McCaughey
Head of Information & CommunicationMary McCaughey is hoofd Informatie en Communicatie bij Eurofound. Afgestudeerd aan het Trinity College in Dublin en het Europacollege in Brugge, begon ze in Brussel te werken bij Europolitics en de Wall Street Journal Europe. Ze werkte samen met de Vereniging van Europese Parlementariërs met Afrika (AWEPA) in Zuid-Afrika tijdens de overgang van het land naar democratie, en in 1998 nam ze de functie van woordvoerder op zich bij de delegatie van de Europese Unie in Pretoria, waar ze leiding gaf aan de pers- en voorlichtingsafdeling tijdens de onderhandelingen over de vrijhandelsovereenkomst tussen de EU en Zuid-Afrika. Na het einde van de Kosovo-oorlog werkte ze als communicatieadviseur voor het Europees Bureau voor Wederopbouw in Servië. In 2003 werd zij hoofdredacteur bij Eurofound.
